Abstract A multi-harmonic accelerating cavity that has its fundamental and harmonic mode frequency detuned away from the bunch repetition frequency could provide the basis for a beam driven wakefield accelerator with high transformer ratios. The excitation of multiple harmonic eigenmodes will allow high gradients to be achieved without encouraging the onset of rf breakdown or pulsed surface heating. This accelerating cavity will be introduced, and time domain simulations verifying the theory will be shown.
