Abstract The Advanced Photo-injector EXperiment (APEX) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is dedicated to the demonstration of the capability of an electron injector based on the VHF-gun, the new concept RF gun developed at LBNL, of delivering the beam quality required by MHz-class repetition rate X-Ray free electron lasers. Project status, plans, and recent results are presented.
